The Vision of Escaflowne light novels, based on the anime, were written in 1996-1997 by creator Shoji Kawamori and Yumiko Tsukamoto. They were illustrated by animation director Hiroshi Osaka, as well as Hirotoshi Sano. There are six light novels based on the anime, and the chapters of each were originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Newtype.
There is also a light novel based on the movie, written by Ryota Yamaguchi.

The light novel for the movie was published in 2000 by Kadokawa under their Sneaker Bunko imprint. It was written by Ryota Yamaguchi, with cover illustration by Yuuki Nobuteru and insert illustrations by Isoda Watako.
