Duke Mahad dal Freid rules the Duchy of Freid, an allied country of Asturia. He is the husband of the late Marlene Aston and the father of Chid Freid.
Life on Gaea[]
Marlene Aston was betrothed to Duke Freid when she was 17 and already carrying Prince Chid at the time as a result of her relationship with Allen Schezar. He was presumably raised by the Duke, and named his heir at some point after his birth.
The Duke welcomes Van, Hitomi, and the others to Freid, but scolds Allen for leaving the country he is sworn to protect, Asturia, and for his other actions. Chid attempts to defend Allen, but the Duke scolds him, telling him that actions such as his rash defense of Allen may throw Freid into ruin. Millerna stands up for Allen, telling the Duke that Allen left to warn Freid of the incoming attack from Zaibach, and that his goal was to protect both Asturia and Freid from further attacks by Zaibach. She encourages the Duke to forgive Allen. The Duke, impressed by Millerna's growth and maturity, decides to forgive Allen and asks if he will fight by his side. Allen agrees to fight alongside him.
Millerna comes upon the Duke again when she visits her late sister's villa. The Duke had Marlene's villa brought from Palas and reconstructed. He gives Millerna permission to use the rooms of the villa as she wishes.
After Millerna finds out the truth about Chid's parentage, she confronts Allen. Allen admits that he is likely the father of Chid, but the Duke firmly declares that Chid is his son.
When Zaibach finally attacks, Chid cries while watching Freid at war. The Duke admonishes him for his tears, telling him that he should not cry.
The Duke takes Van, Allen, Chid, and the others to Fortona Temple where he explains the treasure of Freid is the Sword of Atlantis. He tells Chid that the power of Atlantis which allowed it to fall into ruin cannot be awoken again, and says that if Chid is his son, he will understand. Chid nods in understanding.
The Duke goes into battle with Van and Allen in his own Guymelef, Chafaris. However, Dilandau quickly causes extensive damage to his Guymelef. The Duke leaves his Guymelef and strides out into the open, overlooking the battlefield. He believes that the gods want humanity to undergo a great trial, and that there is no way to avoid awakening the power of Atlantis once again. He draws his sword and announces his presence. Allen tries to stop him. He spares Allen a glance, but in the next moment, he is pierced through by several arrows and falls to the ground. Just before his death, he remembers when Marlene was on her deathbed and told him she fell in love with him and wanted to be with him longer.
In the aftermath of the Duke's death, Chid becomes the new Duke and bequeaths the Sword of Atlantis to Zaibach.
One of the last visions Hitomi sees is of the Duke and Marlene happily reunited in the afterlife.
